On All Levels: Addressing Community Violence

When individuals engage in acts of violence, they rarely do so within a void. Complex factors accumulate and interact with one another up to and in the moment to create the risk of harm. As such, preventing violence requires developing insights about the individual, relationship, community, and social components of violence and implementing violence prevention strategies at each level for a comprehensive approach. Acting within and across multiple levels is needed to sustain prevention efforts over time and achieve a population-level effect. "On All Levels: Addressing Community Violence" is a community event to describe the social-ecological framework for violence prevention and provide knowledge and evidence-based practice about what can be effective at each level.

Presented by the Elk Place Health Spot of the Tulane University School of Social Work and Violence Prevention Institute of the Tulane University School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, this three-hour continuing education session will include presentations from academic and community experts along with a panel discussion of prevention approaches.

The free, three-hour continuing education event is being held in-person at TSSW's Elk Place Building in Room 343 on Thursday, September 29 from noon to 3 pm. Lunch will be provided, and registration is required.

• 30 minutes - Defining Community Violence & Multi-level Approaches to Violence Prevention - Dr. Julia Fleckman, Associate Director of the Violence Prevention Institute, Co-Director of the Center for Youth Equity, and Assistant Professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health 
• 30 minutes - Emotional Regulation & Social Emotional Learning - Dr. Danielle Wright, Division Director of Navigate NOLA
• 30 minutes - Trauma, Intergenerational Trauma, & Violence - Carolyn Waiters Carter, Principal at The Human Element, inc.
• 90 minutes - Panel Discussion: Community-based and Community-led Approaches to Violence Prevention

Individuals who complete this continuing education training will be able to:

• Recognize the risk factors and violence prevention approaches that can be utilized at the individual, relational, community, and societal levels within a social-ecological framework
• Describe interpersonal, structural, and systemic causes of community violence
• Understand the foundations of social-emotional learning and how that can be integrated in to practice, home, and school environments
• Identify means of policy advocacy and how to engage in that as an individual or organization
• Discern the community's role in violence prevention and various approaches to be applied
