Maurya Glaude, PhD, LCSW-BACS attended Texas Southern University where she was mentored by the internationally acclaimed debate coach Dr. Thomas F. Freeman. After earning her B.A. in psychology, Maurya provided disability, survivorship and retirement support services with the Social Security Administration. She later completed her MSW at Tulane University, School of Social Work. She has practiced as a clinician and administrator in both non-profits and government entities and she was instrumental in developing and implementing protocols for evacuation, sheltering, recovery, and rebuilding efforts for Orleans, St. Charles Parish, and Harris County residents in response to hurricanes and tropical storms between 2005-2017. Upon completing her Ph.D. studies at the University of Houston with support from a SAMHSA funded Council on Social Work, MFP doctoral fellowship, Maurya Glaude joined the faculty of Tulane University, School of Social Work. Dr. Glaude’s research interests include adolescent mental health, culturally relevant models of care, and innovative social work teaching methods. She acknowledges her privilege in the academy and continues to co-create and prepare competent social work practitioners through practice-informed research and teaching that prioritizes changing systems towards family preservation and generational healing. Dr. Glaude mentors undergraduate, MSW, and doctoral students and she volunteers in the larger community, having served more than 20 years of active community service as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ®.
