Publication: Environmental Policy & Social Work Call to Action

DSW alum Dr. Nola Gum published "Environmental Policy and Social Work: A Call to Action" in Health and Social Work. According to the abstract, "The concept of social justice is often related to gender, income, race, ethnicity, or nationality. However, the issues of power and oppression that are present in America also exist in the realm of the physical environment and the development and enforcement of environmental laws and regulations. A lack of effective regulation serves to negatively impact marginalized groups that are disproportionately harmed by environmental concerns such as pollution, climate change, disposal of toxic waste, and resource depletion (Sarokin & Schulkin, 1994). As such, environmental justice has an intrinsic connection to social justice and must be treated as a key value in the field of social work."
