Welcome to TSSW!

Tulane School of Social Work is elated to welcome you to our engaged learning community. The following information will help you with the next steps on your educational journey.

Finalize Your Enrollment

If you haven't done so already,

  • Submit your enrollment deposit online. This nonrefundable deposit will be held in your student account and  credited toward your tuition. You can pay your deposit by credit card by logging into the application portal. After your enrollment deposit is processed, you will receive an email confirmation.
    • Once you have paid your deposit, you should receive an email to setup your Tulane email address, which will give you access to the Gibson portal. You'll use the Gibson portal to file for financial aid, pay tuition, register for classes, and perform a number of other activities during your time at Tulane.
    • Continue checking your email for messages from TSSW as well as University Departments such as Campus Health, Campus Services, Student  Accounts, IT, and others as additional actions related to immunization and housing may be needed.
  • If you have not already done so, please send all official transcripts noted on your application checklist. To be considered official, a transcript (1) must be sent directly from your institution to Tulane School of Social Work and (2) must show completion of coursework required for the degree, the degree earned, and the date of degree conferral. You will not be eligible to register for classes until you complete this task. Please note that if the transcript is not sent specifically to the School of Social Work, we may not receive it.
    • Electronic transcripts must be emailed to: msw@tulane.edu.
    • Paper transcripts must be mailed to: Tulane University School of Social Work, 127 Elk Place New Orleans, LA 70112.

Begin Applying for Financial Aid

Get a jump start on the financial aid process by using the applicable Aid Application Checklist on the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) School of Social Work website. If you have not filled out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), please do so as soon as possible. Even if you do not plan to receive federal student aid, TSSW requires that you apply in order to be eligible for institutional scholarship consideration. Students should also submit the School of Social Work's Financial Aid Addendum

Log in to your Gibson portal and navigate to the Financial Aid tab to access your “To Do List” and view any outstanding items pertaining to your aid application. Please work to submit these items as quickly as possible, as a delay in doing so could postpone your offer of aid. Tulane’s Office of Financial Aid is available to assist you and answer questions.

Feel free to contact your dedicated Financial Aid Counselor if you have any specific questions about the aid application process and/or your specific offer of aid.

More information on TSSW scholarships and tuition discounts is available here.

Attend Required TSSW TUesday Talks & Orientation

All incoming Master's level students are required to attend a TSSW TUesday Talk session. Incoming doctorate level students are required to attend a TSSW DSW Drop-In session. These one-hour sessions provide an opportunity to meet with our enrollment team to review important next steps and new student onboarding tasks as well as provide a platform for your questions. You will learn more about program requirements and academic time commitments, receive tips on filing for financial aid, review the process for requesting academic support services, and meet others starting your program.

Please continue to check your Tulane email account as an invitation to attend and essential information will be relayed there.

After attending a TUesday Talk or DSW Drop-In session, newly enrolled MSW and DRLA candidates will attend a TSSW orientation, and incoming DSW candidates will attend a program welcome. On-campus students will attend these sessions on-campus, and online students will attend a Zoom session. We typically schedule these events the week prior to the first day of classes.

Submit Immunization Compliance

All on-campus Tulane students are required to submit proof of immunization compliance per Louisiana state guidelines. Please check your email for information on immunization compliance and take action as soon as possible as you will not be able to register for classes until you do.

Find Registration & Class Information

Information on class schedules and registration is forthcoming from Academic Success Coaches. They will share curriculum paths and can support new students in navigating this process. Our program does not have the same sort of rush in registration that one might see with other programs. All new students will have ample opportunity to register for the courses they need in their first semester.

  • On-campus MSW candidates will have their first semester classes on a Monday/Wednesday schedule with time off on Tuesday/Thursday. The second through fourth semesters will have classes on Tuesday/Thursday and field placement on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

  • Both full-time and part-time online MSW classes are in the evenings with options starting as early as 5:30 p.m. CT. Days vary depending upon the course, and no classes are scheduled on Friday evenings.

  • For MSW, the full-time field placement requirement is 24 hours per week (3 days per week) in the final 3 semesters of the program. The part-time field placement requirement is 12 hours per week (1.5 day per week) for the final 6 semesters of the program.

  • DRL classes will be in the evenings on various days so as to not interfere with MSW classes or field work.

  • DSW classes occur one weekend a month.

Please see TSSW’s academic calendar for more information. You may also want to review the current class schedule and university catalog for more information.

Understand APA Style

The social work profession uses the American Psychological Association (APA) format for writing, and TSSW's program is a reading and writing intensive program. Each student should know and use this format, especially in bibliographic references and citations related to quotations and paraphrasing. Incoming students will be able to participate in an APA workshop online early in the semester, and we strongly encourage accessing the following resources before starting classes.

Paraphrasing and Quotations:

Learn More about COVID-19 Protocols

Tulane University prioritizes the health and safety of its students, faculty, staff, and community. As such, we regularly update our COVID-19 mitigation protocols with guidance from federal, state, and city public health officials. These include requirements on vaccination, testing, face coverings, and quarantine. Updated information can always be found here.

Check Out Housing Options

TSSW students can choose to live in Tulane University graduate housing or explore off-campus options. On-campus housing at the Deming Pavillion is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and we highly recommend submitting your application as early as possible.

You may also find these resources helpful when planning for your move to New Orleans.

Campus Parking

There are several parking garages located throughout Tulane’s Downtown Campus. More information on downtown parking options can be found through Campus Services. You can also contact Tulane Parking directly by emailing parking@tulane.edu or calling 504-865-5441.
