Scott Batey named Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development

Scott Batey, Professor at Tulane School of Social Work, has been appointed Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development. In the role, he will strengthen faculty mentorship, foster a culture of innovation and inclusion, and reinforce the School’s commitment to research, teaching, and service.

To support social work faculty, Batey will focus on plans to build a strong relational culture, committing to the well-being and professional flourishing of every person in the School, communicating openly, and establishing connections with and between students, faculty of all ranks, program staff, and administration.

“In my personal experiences and research, organizations function best when people feel heard, supported, and aligned around common goals,” said Batey. “By intentionally cultivating psychological safety, every member of the TSSW community – regardless of rank, role, or appointment type – will feel not only free to bring their whole selves, their concerns, and their ideas forward, but assured that doing so will be met with respect, care, and authentic engagement.”

Prior to joining Tulane School of Social Work in 2022, Batey served as faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Social Work with dual appointments in the School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases and the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Behavior. His research centers on the social and structural determinants of inequities in HIV prevention and treatment, with particular attention to delivery of interventions and strategies that eliminate gaps in across the HIV Care Continuum, improve health outcomes for people at risk of acquiring HIV, and reduce health-related stigma.

In 2024, Batey was named Chair of Tulane School of Social Work's Retention, Promotion, and Tenure Committee – a governing body that oversees faculty advancement. In the role, he has championed faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service with the goal of achieving Top 10 in 10, or ranking among the top ten schools of social work in the nation within the next decade. As Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development, Batey will remain committed to this goal, applying it more broadly as a unifying and aspirational goal for the School as a whole.

“To strive collectively for Top 10 in 10 is to affirm that every member of the TSSW community matters: prospective, current, and former students; faculty across all ranks and appointment types; staff in every department and at every level; and the communities we serve — from the neighborhoods between the Lake and the River, across Southeast Louisiana, and around the globe,” said Batey.
