Biography
Dr. Steven Gomez is both a medical anthropologist and licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in Texas and Louisiana. His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Texas A&M University, a Master of Science degree in psychology and a Master of Science degree in applied anthropology from the University of North Texas, and a Master of Social Work degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree in anthropology from The University of Oklahoma. Dr. Gomez is also a proud first-generation college student.
As a practitioner-scholar, Dr. Gomez is broadly interested in the social determinants of physical and mental health, health disparities, and the promotion of health equity. He is currently a senior mental health social worker and mental health team lead for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and is approved by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council as a clinical supervisor for social work in Texas. Additionally, he is the owner and founder of Anthro Mental Health, PLLC, where he delivers professional psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families virtually in Texas and Louisiana. Dr. Gomez combines years of education and training in anthropology and clinical social work to treat mental health disorders and serve the community.
Dr. Gomez is interested in the complex ways social, political, and economic forces manifest in human health and human biology, leaving some populations more vulnerable to illness, disease, and suffering than others. He enjoys using direct practice clinical skills to facilitate positive change among individuals, couples, families, and groups. He strives to weave anthropological and social work theory and method in order to maintain a clinical practice informed by a keen awareness of social injustice and health disparities. He has completed multiple independent research projects with diverse communities, including college students in Mexico and Texas, the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma, and low-income, uninsured diabetes patients at a community health clinic.
Dr. Gomez lives with his wife, Brandi, and their two children, David and Cristina, in San Antonio, Texas.
